Sebastian Vettel says he will focus on his own United States GP and not worry about title rival Fernando Alonso's woes.

While Vettel claimed pole position at the Circuit of the Americas on Saturday, Alonso could only manage the ninth fastest time, 1.643s off the pace.

The Ferrari driver will start the grand prix eighth on the grid after Romain Grosjean was penalised.

If the race were to finish with the duo in their starting positions Vettel would claim his third World title as Alonso needs to be inside the top four should the Red Bull racer clinch the victory.

"There's not much to feel [about Alonso being down in eighth]," he said. "We have to look after ourselves.

"I'm very happy, we had a smooth session. We had an issue yestersday and we lost time, things have happened and they might happen again.

"It is the best strategy to keep your head down and try to do your best. I am very happy with the result but so far nobody has scored any points.

"We saw in the last race how quickly things can change and starting from the back gives you opportunities. We will focus on our race and tomorrow aim to seal the Constructors' title for the team."

As for his pole position, the sixth of his campaign, the German reckons it's "fantastic" to be starting the grand prix on the clean side of the grid.

"We're very pleased. We started on the right foot in first practice.

"It was extremely slippery to start with. The circuit is brand new and it takes a while to come in, but it was quite a lot of fun to slide a couple of corners.

"In the final section I would have loved to have gone a bit quicker. It was a bit closer than I wanted, but fantastic to start on the front and on the clean side."
