Life can hardly get any better for Sebastian Vettel as the World Champion has confirmed he is to become a father for the first time.

The German, who has done all he can to keep his private life out of the spotlight, has revealed his long-time girlfriend Hanna Prater is expecting their first child in early 2014.

"We are obviously very pleased and want to now enjoy this in private," Vettel told Germany's Bild while his spokesperson confirmed that the sex of the child remains unknown.

The 26-year-old and Prater have been dating since high school, but she has rarely been seen in public, but Vettel paid tribute to her after he secured the 2013 World Championship in India.

"The season was not as easy as it might have seemed from the outside," he said at the time. "It wasn't easy to be booed on the podium after a few races, when I hadn't done anything wrong. My girlfriend really helped me a lot."
