Failing to make it into Q3, Sebastian Vettel has revealed he "struggled for driveability" of his RB10 in the rain.

While the Australian GP weekend's practice sessions all went well for the German and his Red Bull team that all came to naught in Saturday's qualifying.

As the rain came down, he battled to keep his RB10 pointing in the right direction.

The reigning World Champion, who only once failed to make it into the pole position shoot-out the whole of last season, could only manage a 1:44.668 which meant he dropped out in Q2.

Vettel's time put him 13th on the grid although a penalty to Valtteri Bottas has elevated him to 12th.

"It is disappointing because the car seemed to be very good yesterday," Vettel told reporters.

"I was struggling a little bit more, especially in the wet conditions. Basically I struggled for driveability, for control.

"For some reason we have lost that overnight so we need to understand why that happened.

"We've had these conditions like this before but I was struggling for some reason."

The German, though, drew some comfort from his team-mate's achievements as Daniel Ricciardo qualified on the front row of the grid on his Red Bull debut.

"I think the car has potential. Danny is showing what it can do. He puts the car where it belongs," Vettel told AAP.
