Hulkenberg: The baseline is good

Nico Hulkenberg believes Sauber are ready for the challenges ahead after a solid showing in pre-season testing.

Leaving Force India in favour of a move to Sauber for this season, Hulkenberg quickly adapted to his new team and their C32.

The German demonstrated good pace during the pre-season, finishing sixth overall, while the Sauber covered more kilometres than any other team at Barcelona.

"In terms of competitiveness, the final Barcelona test showed we are quite well prepared but still have some homework to do, and that we still have room for improvement in certain areas," said the German.

"But I'm confident the baseline is good.

"I'm really looking forward to racing against the usual grid and finally get a clear picture of where everybody stands with regard to performance."

Hulkenberg will be teaming up with Esteban Gutierrez for the Mexican driver's first season in Formula One.

The 21-year-old has set himself a target of consist top-ten results with the aim being to improve with every grand prix.

"Competing in a Formula One race is the next step in my career, and that's what I need to focus on," he said.

"One of the things that I need to do is feel natural and relaxed in my surroundings so I can focus on the most important elements during the weekend.

"I feel I have a good base for the start of the season, but, of course, I will keep on working as I have areas were I can improve. My goal is to exploit the car's potential and finish consistently within the points."
