Giedo: Weight limit issue outrageous

Giedo van der Garde has weighed in on F1's new weight limit, saying it would be "outrageous" if it cost Nico Hulkenberg and Paul di Resta drives.

Although the weight limit has been increased to 690kgs for next year's Championship, much of the extra 48kgs is set to go towards the new V6 turbocharged engines and the Energy Recovery Systems.

In recent weeks, reports have emerged that teams are struggling to get down to the minimum weight, putting the future of taller heavier drivers at risk.

There is speculation that the weight could yet cost Hulkenberg and di Resta a place on the grid although the German is believed to be on the verge of signing with Lotus.

"I'm on the limit at 73kg," van der Garde, who has yet to secure a 2014 seat, told GPUpdate.net

"It wouldn't be good if Hülkenberg and di Resta can't drive in F1 anymore because they are considered to be too heavy. That would be outrageous.

"Next year's rules state that a car and driver can't weigh less than 690kg. Of course teams would like to be as close to that weight as possible, preferably exactly on that weight. And ideally they would have some room left to play about with the weight distribution.

"So having a heavier driver in your car is a little bit of a disadvantage."
