'Button drove with assurance'

'Button drove with assurance'

Martin Whitmarsh is singing the praises of Jenson Button after the Brit secured his first-ever pole as a McLaren driver.

Button joined McLaren at the start of the 2010 season but has never tasted success on a Saturday afternoon with the Woking team. That, though, changed at Spa.

Opting for a few alterations to his rear wing in Q2, Button found some blistering pace and stormed to his first pole position since 2009 by 0.298s over his nearest rival.

"Jenson did a great lap. He struggled a bit this morning, but drove with such assurance during qualifying," Whitmarsh told the BBC.

"It's super for him.

"It's been difficult here for everyone, not running yesterday, but Jenson has kept calm and done a fantastic job."

He added: "I think he's in very good shape for tomorrow."
