Formula One is a team sport but drivers are basically "egomaniacs" on the track according to Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg.
However the 25-year-old German said Formula One racers did not necessarily have to be "ruthless" although "that's always a matter of opinion."
Hulkenberg, who has joined Sauber from Force India, meanwhile said he had no difficulty settling into a new team and liked the look of the C32 Sauber.
"It is innovative and aggressive, something new," he told dpa in an interview.
"You have to think aggressively and innovatively to make a step forward in Formula One."
Sauber go into the season with the new driver line-up of Hulkenberg and Mexican Esteban Gutierrez, who was testing the car in Jerez on Thursday.
The Swiss team finished on the podium four times last year and were sixth in the Constructors' Championship.
