Williams are hopeful that they will be able to start catching up to their midfield rivals now that Formula One is back on European soil.

The Grove squad had high hopes of challenging higher up the grid at the start of the season, but Pastor Maldonado and Valtteri Bottas have instead found life very difficult.

The duo are yet to make it through to Q3 while team also failed to pick up a point in the first four flyaway races.

However, chief race engineer Xevi Pujolar says their technical staff have been working hard to improve the FW34 ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend.

"We are working with a package for Spain and we expect it to be better - but we cannot say how much," he is quoted as saying by Autosport.

"All the races [at the start of the season] were very close together, with every track changing and what was happening with the tyre changing - so while we could see the problem, from one place to another it was not exactly the same.

"So we have been catching up and trying to get the best for Barcelona. Once we are in Europe, then probably everything will be a bit easier.

"First of all the logistics are an improvement, plus we are closer to the factory - so everything will work much better."

One of the major areas that Williams are hoping to improve is the exhaust, but Pujolar says they will take several updates to Barcelona and are confident it will give them a lift.

"At the moment we think that it's going in the right direction, even though it is not going as fast as we would like," he said.

"But all the parts we brought to the car we've run them, so that's good."
