Alonso hopes Silverstone was a one-off

Fernando Alonso admits only time will tell if Ferrari's poor display at Silverstone was an exception or the rule.

The Scuderia have been pretty consistent this year with Alonso able to mix it with the front-runners during the first seven races to keep himself firmly in the hunt for the Championship.

However, they were off the pace at the British Grand Prix the whole weekend and, although the Spaniard managed to finish third at Silverstone, he knows they were not quite up to standard.

"We need to answer what is our real performance. We have been very good this year apart from the Silverstone weekend where we were not competitive, not good enough to fight with the top guys. So I am curious to see if it was only one race or whether we lost performance somewhere," Alonso is quoted as saying by DPA.

Mercedes appear to be the team to beat the moment as Lewis Hamilton claimed the team's fifth pole position of the season at Silverstone while Nico Rosberg went onto claim his second win in three races.

Alonso admits the Brackley-based squad are likely to be very strong again at this weekend's German Grand Prix.

"They are very strong. They have proven that they are extremely quick. Before it was qualifying, now they are also very quick in the race. I have no doubts that they will fight until the end. Nico and Hamilton will be tough contenders," the Ferrari driver said.

This post-British GP news have been dominated by the Pirelli compounds after four different drivers suffered left-rear tyre blowouts at Silverstone, prompting the tyre manufacture make announce changes.

Alonso was caught in the thick of things at Silverstone as he was driving close to Sergio Perez when a tyre on his McLaren exploded.

"You are behind one car and there are pieces of tyre or seal flying at 300 kilometres per hour. If they touch your helmet they will be like a bullet and will kill you," he said.

He added: "They changed the tyres. I think it is the first time in history that happened in the middle of the year. Some people will benefit, for some it will halt performance a little bit. Hopefully we will be among the benefit teams.
