Magnussen linked with McLaren seat

According to a report in the British media, Kevin Magnussen could replace Sergio Perez as Jenson Button's team-mate at McLaren for 2014.

The report published in The Telegraph, claims that the Mexican would be replaced by the McLaren-developed youngster Magnussen, who recently won the Formula Renault 3.5 series.

The 21-year-old Dane, who is the son of former McLaren test driver Jan Magnussen, was given a GP2 test as part of his reward for winning his 2013 title, but according to The Telegraph's correspondent Tom Cary, Magnussen withdrew from the GP2 run "for unexplained reasons".

Formula Renault 3.5 was recently described as a "much higher quality championship than GP2" by McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh, so a poor session by Magnussen could have been a threat to his reputation.

While some young drivers would prefer to make their F1 debuts for a team with less pressure to perform at first - like Marussia or Force India - Magnussen would prefer a more competitive environment to work in.

"It's true there is a bigger risk in going to a top team because if you don't perform then you're out of formula one. But for me, if I get to a top team and don't perform then it means I'm not good enough," Magnussen told Cary in Abu Dhabi.

"For me, if I can get a competitive seat in the first year I would prefer that."
