'Maldonado is a great fighter'

Pastor Maldonado is "often underestimated" and deserves more credit as a driver, that's according to Xevi Pujolar.

Pujolar got to know Maldonado well during their time together at Williams where he was the chief race engineer before moving onto Toro Rosso.

And although Maldonado, who is now with Lotus, is often criticised for his erratic driving, Pujolar believes the Venezuelan driver deserves better.

"I have alwayws said that Pastor and [Juan Pablo] Montoya impressed me the most," he told Motorsport Magazin.com.

"Maybe they did that because they are such great fighters.

"But Pastor has shown that he is fast and I think he is often underestimated."

He added: "I have worked with top drivers like Mark Webber or Ralf Schumacher... but for me it was not the same with them.

"He [Maldonado] was well understood when he came back from the track and began to talk about the car.

"I immediately saw his reaction and knew what was going on with the car. After analyzing the data it was clear... yes this is it."
