Businessman Carlos Slim Domit believes the Mexican Grand Prix has a "good future ahead" and hopes to see the race return to the Formula One calendar soon.

Slim is a key player in bringing the sport back to Mexico for the first time since 1992 and was instrumental in the careers of Sergio Perez and Esteban Gutierrez through his Escuderia Telmex driver programme, as well as sponsorship of the Sauber team.

"I believe there is potential to do more races in the Americas and I believe that Mexico is in the right spot to do it," said Slim in an interview with FIA journal AUTO.

"It's a stable country by and large, our economy is doing quite well and we have drivers people can identify with.

"All of the pieces are coming together and I believe the potential promoters are doing a good job in trying to secure something."

Perez echoed Slim's statements, the McLaren driver believing the country's hopes of returning to the F1 calendar will be boosted by him challenging at the front of the grid.

"The interest is quite big since I came to F1 and my results last year, with three podiums, mean people are getting excited, especially now I am with McLaren," Perez said.

"I really hope that I can help to get a Mexican Grand Prix."

Guiterrez, currently in his first season in F1 with Sauber, believes the sport will return to the North American country sooner rather than later.

"They are waiting for the right time," said Gutierrez of the Mexican GP.

"I know they are in negotiations and obviously it would be a very special thing for us to have a Mexican Grand Prix.

"The people who are responsible for that are focusing on it and they really want to make it happen.

"As a driver, the only thing I can focus on is to get good results so that interest is more, to raise more confidence for the event to happen as I think it is connected to that."

Mexico played host for a grand prix on 15 occasions previously, from 1963-1970 and 1986-1992.
