McLaren set to choose Magnussen

McLaren are expected to replace Sergio Perez with Kevin Magnussen for the 2014 season, according to various media reports.

The 21-year-old Dane won the Formula Renault 3.5 title ahead of fellow McLaren contractee Stoffel Vandoorne and looks set to be the first rookie to join the Woking-based team since Lewis Hamilton in 2007, according to reports by the BBC and Press Association Sport.

According to the reports, McLaren would have preferred to let Magnussen gain experience elsewhere on the grid in 2014, but continued that he is expected to be Jenson Button's team-mate in 2014 after the team lost faith in Perez's abilities.

The Mexican driver joined McLaren ahead of the 2013 season after achieving some impressive results with Sauber previously, but he struggled to make much of an impression this year in an uncompetitive car.

McLaren chief Martin Whitmarsh has so far denied the reports, saying that a number of drivers are still in contention for a drive next season during a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes phone-in.

"Lots of people are being considered," he said.

"When we've come to the end of those considerations we'll make an announcement.

"Firstly we have not provided either of our drivers with a good enough race car this year, so in those circumstances I think Sergio has been a great team member.

"He's made a concerted contribution and he's produced some really good races, some exciting races. He's ruffled some feathers and he's done a pretty good job throughout the whole year. Abu Dhabi was difficult. It was not quite the result that we wanted and he wanted but difficult weekends happen.

"I think overall he's done a good job and we're still talking to him. I know there are all sorts of things I've read in the media. The fact is at the moment we haven't confirmed our driver line-up, we haven't signed contracts with drivers, and we're still talking about that. There's a lot of honest feedback both ways, but that's best done in private."
