'One of the best' for Vergne

Jean-Eric Vergne reckons his Friday's running at Spa was some of the best he's had on an opening day of a grand prix weekend.

The Frenchman, who one could say has a point to prove after being passed over for a 2014 Red Bull ride, had the measure of his team-mate in Friday's practice.

Although Vergne could only manage P13 on a drying track in the morning, he found some impressive pace in the afternoon's dry session.

Clocking a 1:50.253, he finished the day fifth quickest, 0.922s off the pace. However, more to the point he was a full second quicker than Daniel Ricciardo.

"Friday went very smoothly for us," Vergne said.

"The morning conditions were not ideal, as it was too wet for dry tyres and too dry for the rain tyres, but we still learnt something which could be useful later in the weekend, even if the tyres never got up to temperature.

"Then, we had a good FP2, with the car showing excellent pace over a single lap. The long run was a bit more difficult, but all the same, I feel we have a good car this weekend, whether we run in the dry or the wet.

"Probably one of the best first days I've had: there were no problems and the car seems to be working well."
