Chilton set to realise Silverstone dream

Max Chilton will realise a childhood dream this weekend when he takes part in his maiden Formula One race at Silverstone.

Although he has raced at the Northamptonshire track before, the Marussia rookie knows nothing comes close than taking part in motorsport's blue riband event on home soil.

Chilton will be one of four "locals" to take part in this weekend's British Grand Prix alongside Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton and Paul di Resta.

"I've raced at Silverstone the last three years in GP2 and prior to that I had attended two British GPs as a fan," the 22-year-old told Press Association Sport.

"So I've seen the crowds and how big they are and how much they get behind the drivers - and now I can't wait to get there and savour the atmosphere as a Formula One driver.

"It's definitely going to be a dream come true, a moment I'll never forget, to race at my home track and with three other Brits on the grid as well.

"My debut in Australia was also something never to be forgotten and now this will be the next race that is going to be seriously special for me.

"I am really, really looking forward to it. I can't wait."

Although he usually finds himself struggling at the wrong end of the grid, Chilton has dreams of challenging at the front one day.

However, for now he needs to impress his financial backers and his Marussia bosses if he wants to earn an extension to his one-year contract.

"I'd love to stay. That's my dream, with the goal of becoming World Champion," said Chilton.

"To do that I need to stay in the sport and to do that I need to perform well.

"So I have to spend my time performing and focusing on getting the most out of the car and myself and then we'll see what comes.

"At the moment there's no deal on the table for next year. We've not even talked about it. That's the way Formula One is.

"A lot of people come in with different ways and we'll have to see how it goes.

"We've 12 races left, so we've plenty more time to think about just getting the best out of myself and we'll see what next year brings nearer the time.

"But I'd love to stay with Marussia and work my way up with them because they have the right package and attitude."
