Jules Bianchi says his goal this season is not to beat Max Chilton but rather to improve on a regular basis.
The Frenchman will make his Formula One debut next weekend when he lines up on the Australian Grand Prix grid for Marussia.
Bianchi, who was called up late by the backmarker outfit, has only spent two days in the MR02. However, on both days at Barcelona he edged Marussia's main rival Caterham.
He also proved to be quicker than his team-mate Chilton, posting a fastest time of 1:23.167 compared to the Brit's 1:24.103.
Bianchi, though, is adamant that beating Chilton is not his biggest target in his debut season.
"Obviously we are always driving to be quick, but it's not only to beat your team-mate but also to improve the car and beat the other teams in the paddock," he told ESPNF1.
"We are trying to do our best and we will see."
He added: "We are trying to improve but we need time. Maybe before Melbourne it will be a bit tight, but during the season I'm sure we will improve a lot."
