Not since Lewis Hamilton in 2007 has McLaren risked of putting a rookie in the car. But whether Kevin Magnussen can emulate Hamilton remains to be seen.
Born: 5 October 1992
Debut season: 2014
Starting his career in karting, the Dane won the Formula Ford in Denmark in 2008 before finishing runner-up in Formula Renault a year later. He lost out to F1 hopeful António Félix da Costa.
Moving onto the German Formula Three Championship, Kevin won the opening round of the season and went on to finish third in the Championship, the year's best rookie.
He continued to make his way through the ranks when he headed to British Formula Three and then Formula Renault 3.5 Series where he spent two seasons, winning the 2013 Championship with Dams.
Promised a seat on the 2014 Formula One grid by a rival team, Martin Whitmarsh revealed that the handshake had not been honour and as a result McLaren would in fact race the young driver this year.
With new regulations shaking up the grid, McLaren are hoping that Magnussen will be given a level playing field while the Dane is hoping that any comparisons with Hamilton prove favourable.
