Hamilton: Eye on the ball

Lewis Hamilton says he's not willing to talk about his future or his first Italian GP win, rather he'd like to speak about what's already happened such as his pole position.

The 27-year-old put the speculation about his future behind him at Monza on Saturday as he stormed to his fourth pole position of this season with a 1:24.010. That put the McLaren driver 0.123s up on his own team-mate Jenson Button.

"I don't want to talk about winning the race here for the first time or my future," said Hamilton. "Let's talk about the things that have happened first and the others when something else happens."

Pressed as to whether thoughts of his future were playing on his mind this weekend, he added: "Other people deal with that. Occasionally, it pops into your mind but then you have to keep your eye on the ball."

And his eye was firmly on the ball in qualifying, although the Brit reckons he could have gone even quicker if needed.

"I think practice was a lot better for me, I did much better laps in practice.

"Generally I didn't think that lap was anywhere near good enough and I was up a couple of tenths on my second lap, but I was in a train of cars so was not able to better my lap.

"Nonetheless I am happy, and happy for team - they are doing a fantastic job.

"They had great success in the last race with Jenson and to have us both up here is what they deserve."

But while McLaren may have secured the 1-2 in qualifying, Hamilton believes they could have a tough time repeat the feat in Sunday's 53-lap Italian GP.

"Obviously it's still very close between us and Ferrari and Lotus and Mercedes. We are in a good position but we need to find more time. I have never won here and I don't want to talk about it. I want to do it first."
