Massa: P1 time means nothing

Massa: P1 time means nothing

Felipe Massa is keeping his "feet on the ground" as he believes his blistering P1 time on Thursday is of little significance.

Massa blitzed the competition on Day Three at the Jerez circuit when he crossed the line with a 1:17.879 during the morning session.

The Ferrari driver's time was set on a short run on the soft tyres and he followed it up a short while later with a marginally slower lap.

But despite finishing 0.339s ahead of the week's second best time, which was set by Romain Grosjean on Wednesday, Massa insists it is nothing to get too excited about.

"It means nothing and while I'm pleased to have done a good time, that was not the priority - we must still concentrate on the car set-up and we will definitely be doing this during the next test in Barcelona," said the 31-year-old.

"Several teams have very quick and well balanced cars, and so I am one hundred percent keeping my feet on the ground."

In fact Massa still reckons the best time set this weekend was Jenson Button's pace-setting 1:18.861 on Tuesday as it was clocked on Day One, on a dirty track and on hard tyres.

"I still believe his lap was incredible. Going with the hard tyres on the first day on a dirty track and everything I still believe it was a quick lap time.

"But I also didn't have the car to do this lap time on the first day, we didn't even try to work for the lap time but I think the lap was impressive and for sure many people is thinking the same about me now but we improved the car and all these days found some areas that I found improvement as well with the grip and driving.

"I think it was a good lap that we did but we'll wait and be sure of exactly what we're going to have at the beginning of the Championship."
