Silverstone chiefs wary of 'Vettel effect'

Silverstone bosses will be hoping to see either Lewis Hamilton or Jenson Button on the podium in the run-up to the British Grand Prix.

Defending Champion Sebastian Vettel leads the Drivers' standings after claiming his second race win of the season at Bahrain, but if history is anything to go by then ticket sales will be affected if the Red Bull driver continues to dominate.

With only three races before the British GP on June 30, organisers will be hoping that Mercedes driver Hamilton and Button from McLaren will be challenging for podiums in the next two months.

Silverstone managing director Richard Phillips has admitted that ticket sales for the race were down nearly 10 per cent on last year, when 297,000 people attended over the three days.

"If you look at the cycle on selling tickets... on the Monday after a grand prix Sunday you tend to see a spike," he said. "The weekend we had Lewis on the podium there was a spike and when you see Vettel there is less of a spike.

"I think the needle-movers [for sales] are going to be basically 'not Vettel'."

British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC) Derek Warwick also admitted that Hamilton and Button's success will be key to sales.

"When we know that Lewis and Jenson are coming into the grand prix off the back of a couple of wins, we see a massive spike in our sales," he said.
