Prac Two: Alonso Edges Hamilton

Prac Two: Alonso Edges Hamilton

Fernando Alonso set the pace on the supersoft tyres in second practice in Montreal, edging Lewis Hamilton by 0.012s...

Unlike in the morning's session, there was a mad dash to get out on track with Kimi Raikkonen, Mark Webber, Nico Rosberg and Paul di Resta all holding the P1 slot in the first five minutes. However, as the session settled down - with many drivers opting for the development Pirelli tyres - it was di Resta who was quickest of all with his 1:16.382.

Felipe Massa was the next to lead the way as the Ferrari driver followed up a close encounter with the Wall with a 1:16.001. His reign, though, was short-lived as Lewis Hamilton overhauled him by 0.299s. The Brit went on to lower the benchmark to a 1:15.620.

Just before the halfway mark the drivers began to switch over to the supersoft tyres with Sebastian Vettel immediately jumping to the front. It was a 1:15.378 for the Red Bull racer who has yet to win a Canadian Grand Prix. Webber edged his team-mate by 0.058s sparking a brief battle where the duo traded fastest laps. Webber came out top with a 1:15.212, 0.068s up on his team-mate.

In sharp contract Raikkonen struggled to get the most out of his tyres to start with and it was only on his third that he improved his time, taking third behind the Red Bulls and ahead of Hamilton and Sergio Perez.

The Red Bull racers were soon edged by the Mercedes drivers as Hamilton and Rosberg ventured out for their supersoft tyre runs. Hamilton went quickest with a 1:15.006 while Rosberg climbed to third. Hamilton went on to improve on his second flying lap, a 1:14.830.

It was all change again as Fernando Alonso went quickest by 0.012s ahead of Hamilton. And that is how the timesheets looked when the drivers swapped to heavier fuel load and longer distances. Add in a few drops of the rain and the laps times were five to seven seconds slower.

Alonso was one of the most consistent, lapping in the 1:18s while Webber was matching the Spaniard.

Alonso, though, also had the pace over a short distance and finished in the P1 slot, 0.012s up on Hamilton. Grosjean was third.
