Webber: A lucky recovery

Mark Webber says he a "lucky" recovery in Britain as other drivers' bad luck and tyre failures played into his hands.

The Australian driver, who announced earlier this weekend that he would be leaving F1 at the end of this season, came from fourth on the grid to finish second at Silverstone on Sunday.

However, it was a case of what could have been as Webber brought his RB9 home 0.765s behind race winner Nico Rosberg.

"It's easy to say that when with ten laps to go you can see the win in sight," Webber said when asked if he felt the win got away from him on Sunday.

"It is mixed feelings when you finish seven-tenths behind the win but he (Rosberg) is also out there doing his thing so he deserved the win.

"We did recover and we had a bit of luck after that but we have to be there to capitalise on a good strategy.

"Obviously I pushed very very hard to do the business."

Second, though, was an incredible recovery given that Webber was bogged down at the start and then suffered a damaged front wing when he was clipped by Lotus' Romain Grosjean.

Forced to pit early for repairs, the 36-year-old faced a massive task fighting back but was at times helped by Safety Car periods, the result of tyre failures for some drivers and a gearbox retirement for his own team-mate Sebastian Vettel.

"I have no idea how we can be so good on some weekends and not on others so that was a big negative for us," Webber said of his start.

"Grosjean or someone, I think it was him, touched my wing at Turn 1 so I had to get that changed at the first stop and then the race really reset from there.

"The Safety Cars obviously helped although I didn't want them because of the reasons they were happening, I was very nervous for all the drivers to see that happening.

"But in the end a very very good result for myself, for the team, we still got something out of it what looked like it would be a pretty random weekend on race day.

"I want to think all the English and British fans for all the support I've had over here, it's been a real honour to race at this circuit."
