McLaren chasing Alonso for 2014

Fernando Alonso could yet return to McLaren next season after Martin Whitmarsh expressed an interest in re-signing the Spaniard.

In what would be an even more sensational move than Ferrari nabbing Kimi Raikkonen from Lotus, McLaren have set their sights on Alonso.

The double World Champion raced for McLaren back in 2007 in what proved to be an acrimonious season for both the driver and the team.

Despite having a multi-year deal with the Woking outfit, after a year of fighting with Lewis Hamilton and then team boss Ron Dennis, Alonso opted to leave.

However, now under new management in Whitmarsh, McLaren could try to persuade Alonso to drop Ferrari for McLaren.

Asked if he wanted the double World Champion, Whitmarsh told BBC Sport: "Yes - any team would. He's the best driver.

"I don't know his contractual situation. I assume he's under contract."

Meanwhile, one F1 insider told the Beeb that all is not well between Alonso and Ferrari, who have had a few public spats this season.

"The love affair [between Alonso and Ferrari] is over. That's obvious," said the insider.
