Kvyat gets the nod for Toro Rosso seat

Teenager Daniil Kvyat has won the race to replace the Red Bull-bound Daniel Ricciardo at Toro Rosso for the 2014 season.

In a surprise move by the Faenza-based squad, the 19-year-old Russian was on Monday evening confirmed as Jean-Eric Vergne's partner for the new campaign.

Portuguese driver Antonio Felix da Costa was long considered favourite to take over from Ricciardo, but the seat went to Kvyat in the end with Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko breaking the news.

"Whenever we put him in a car his efforts were remarkable," Marko told Servus TV channel.

"If a young driver proves talent, passion and a high level of work ethic, we give him a chance. It's that perspective that is why we chose Kvyat."

The Rome-based Kvyat is taking part in the GP3 series - where he is currently second in the standings ahead of the final round in Abu Dhabi - and the FIA Formula 3 European Championship.

Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost says the youngster's feedback played a major role in the decision to award in him the race seat.

"We are pleased to continue our policy of bringing on drivers from the Red Bull Junior Programme. Daniil is a very talented driver, which can be seen from his results in all the junior categories," he said.

He added: "He impressed our team with a strong performance and very informative technical feedback at the young driver test in Silverstone. This suggests that the basic qualities from which he can progress are all in place. Daniil can be sure that we will use all our experience of training youngsters to give him the best possible start to his Formula 1 career."

Kvyat was naturally delighted to be promoted to the 2014 Formula One grid.

"This is fantastic news, a dream come true and I want to thank Red Bull and Toro Rosso for giving me this priceless opportunity," he said.

"Ever since I began karting, I wanted to get to Formula 1 and now that wish will become reality next season. I had a brief taste of working with the Toro Rosso team, when I drove for them at the Silverstone test and I enjoyed the experience very much. The fact I am based in Italy and speak Italian will, I am sure, help me to become part of the team very quickly."
