McLaren will protect Magnussen

The management of McLaren believes Kevin Magnussen can be protected from the 'ravages' of Formula One during his debut season in 2014.

The Danish rookie was confirmed as Sergio Perez's replacement as Jenson Button's team-mate at the Woking team after winning the 2013 Formula Renault 3.5 title.

At just 21 years of age, Magnussen is likely to be exposed to far more pressure to perform to a high standard than he is used to, and McLaren managing director Jonathan Neale confirmed on Friday that the team will try and protect the youngster wherever they can.

"I hope we can protect him from the ravages of F1," Neale told Autosport.

"For anybody coming up from another series to F1, the white heat of expectation is very difficult.

"So we need to shelter them from that expectation in the media, and the ups and the downs in the media that inevitably go with it."

Neale recalled how successful McLaren were in promoting Lewis Hamilton to F1 from GP2 in 2007 and is confident that a similar approach will benefit the Dane.

"We have done it before," Neale added.

"We did it well with Lewis and we will do it again here.

"He [Magnussen] has got a very strong head and has had the kind of year that has been about tenacity and fight.

"He is a very level-headed and quick guy and we are really looking forward to getting him in the car."
