Alonso looks to emulate Schumacher

Heading into his fifth season with Ferrari, Fernando Alonso is drawing inspiration from Michael Schumacher who took five years to win with the Scuderia.

Joining Ferrari in 1996, Schumacher won his first title in 2000 and that sparked a record-breaking run from the German.

Schumcher went onto win five titles on the trot, a feat that Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel is looking to match this season.

Alonso, though, is determined to put an end to Vettel's run and start his own with Ferrari.

"I think Schumacher won in the fifth year with Ferrari," he said at Saturday's launch of the F14T. "I'm in the fifth year now so hopefully I can repeat some of the success that he had.

"Obviously in the last four years we had some opportunities, especially in 2010, 2012, we were very, very close to winning the Championship.

"So this year we will try again and hopefully this time will be a good one."

Weighing in on the new regulations, the Spaniard concedes it would take some time to adjust driving styles to get the maximum out of the new engine and the fuel limits.

"I think in 2014 F1 will change a lot with the regulations," he said. "Those will have some implications on the driving style so I'm looking forward to discovering this new Formula One."

This season Alonso will also have to deal with a new team-mate as Felipe Massa has left Ferrari, replaced by the Scuderia's last World Champion Kimi Raikkonen.

"I think Kimi and me as a team we should be quite strong on the paper because we've had some success in the past in the Formula One career," said Alonso.

"But this you need to discover, every year we start from zero. If we do well we will have a very strong team, we can deliver some good results for Ferrari.

"If we don't do good enough some other teams will have another best pairing drivers. So it's up to us to deliver and do a good job."
