Kimi 'would not have' progressed

Kimi Raikkonen has revealed that he was actually head back into the pits when he crashed in Saturday's qualifying for the Australian GP.

The Finn's first qualifying back with Ferrari did not go according to plan as Raikkonen crashed out in Q2 when he spun in the rain at Turn 3.

As a result he will start Sunday's Australian Grand Prix from 11th place on the grid.

However, that would have been Raikkonen's starting position even if he hadn't crashed as he has revealed he was actually on his way back to the pits.

"I was just playing around with the switches or something and got a little bit of wheelspin and touched the wall," Raikkonen explained to ESPNF1. "It was just one mistake.

"I just got a little bit of wheelspin. I wasn't pushing anymore anyhow but just got wheelspin. I just couldn't catch it. That didn't change the fact that we would not have gone through anyhow.

"I think we had some speed, but it was just the traffic, so obviously with those things it's a bit tricky. I didn't have any more time to do an extra lap [when I spun] so I would have come in [the pits] anyhow."
