Bernie giving 'serious thought' to retiring

Bernie Ecclestone's days as F1 supremo could be nearing an end - but it is his age, not his legal trouble, that is responsible.

Ecclestone has been at the helm of Formula One for 40 years, however, as he is set to mark his 84th birthday later this year he admits he's contemplating retirement.

He told The Mirror: "I'm going to be 84 at the end of this year so I am probably going to have to start to think, 'Do I want to go into the 85th year doing what I've been doing for goddamn how many years'.

"It's something I'll have to give some very serious thought to."

The F1 supremo refuted suggestion that his pending court case in Germany, in which he will have to answer charges of bribery, was planning a role in him considering retirement.

"No," he said. "That's nothing. No, no. It's the way people have to run businesses today compared to how they used to.

"I never knew about corporate governance back then, different committees, ethics committees and God knows what else boards to report to. I never reported to any.

"I didn't know about any of these things back then. Probably, if I had of done, I wouldn't have lasted as long as I lasted.

"And we will be more restricted as time goes on. That's how the world is. It's coming that way. I don't agree with it.

"What we are slowly but surely managing to do is get rid of entrepreneurs. Getting rid of people who think outside the box."

Pressed as to how difficult it would be to walk away such as 'leading sports stars do at the top of their game', Ecclestone said: "They do these things though you know...

"The important thing is to know when you should hang the boxing gloves up. So you are not going to end up going into the ring and getting a good hiding."
