Hulkenberg had 'fun' in Austria

Despite struggling for pace in the afternoon, Nico Hulkenberg enjoyed his first day of running at the Red Bull Ring.

Austria has not featured on the Formula 1 calendar in a decade meaning Friday's action was the first time the Force India driver had put in a lap of the Spielberg track.

"It's a fun track," he said. "Quite a short lap, but it flows nicely.

"It looks easier on paper because in reality it's quite challenging and technical in many areas."

The day, though, did not quite go according to plan for the German and his team as, although seventh quickest in the morning, he was P17 in the afternoon.

Hulkenberg's 1:11.935 was 2.393s slower than the P1 time with the former Sauber driver unsure as to the exact reason why he was lacking pace.

"The morning session was very solid; I was happy with the car straight away and the performance was there.

"For some reason we struggled more this afternoon on both tyre compounds and I was not as comfortable in the car: so that is where we need to analyse things tonight.

"One explanation could be the wind, which picked up this afternoon, but we will look deep into the data to make sure we improve things for tomorrow."
