Button expecting emotional weekend

Button expecting emotional weekend

Jenson Button admits this year's British GP will be "extra special for him" as it will be his first following the death of his father.

John Button played a major role in Jenson's motorsport career and used to be an ever-present figure in the F1 paddock, but he died of a suspected heart attack in January.

Jenson has launched a couple of initiatives for his home race this weekend in memory of his late father.

"This year will be extra special for me, and probably a little more emotional than normal - it's normally very emotional anyway because of the support, but it will be more so this year," he is quoted as saying by Press Association Sport.

"We're trying to get as many people wearing pink as we can, which is going very well, and I will be wearing a pink helmet, so there will be a lot of pink at Silverstone in support of my old boy.

"I'm really excited about it, but it is going to be very emotional."

The money made from the pink t-shirts initiative will go to the Henry Surtees Foundation, which was set up by former World Champion John Surtees after his son Henry was killed in a Formula Two accident.

Back to the track and Button knows his McLaren team won't be challenging at the front of the grid this weekend.

"We won't get on the podium at Silverstone. No chance!" the 2009 World Champion said.

"As it's my home race I'll get an extra lift, but it won't make us go any quicker - I wish it would."
