Vettel denies Bulls are closing up

Sebastian Vettel has refuted suggestions that Red Bull have made any great inroads into Mercedes' advantage, saying it is as big as it was at "race one."

Mercedes have dominated this year's Championship, taking eight wins from nine grands prix including six 1-2 results.

The team has a comfortable 158-point lead in the Constructors' Championship while Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton are racing away with the Drivers' title.

But despite trailing Mercedes in both Championships, Red Bull have spoken in recent weeks about finding more speed and closing the gap.

Vettel, though, says that hasn't really happened.

"Right now the gap is very big and we haven't really closed the gap since race one," the four-time Champion told Sky Sports News.

"Obviously we have tried lots of stuff to improve, but they are doing the same thing.

"We are waiting for bigger steps to happen to close the gap even more which I think at the end of the season we can judge a lot better, then we know what we can do over the winter."

The 27-year-old and his Red Bull Racing team could be given a welcome boost ahead of next weekend's German GP courtesy of the FIA.

Motorsport's governing body is considering banning the Front-and-Rear Interconnected Suspension (FRIC) system as it could be considered a moveable aerodynamic device.

And should FRIC be banned, many in the paddock believe it will hurt Mercedes more than any other team.

Vettel, though, has downplayed talk of Mercedes taking a hit.

"Obviously we know what we are running, we don't know what they are running, but it is pretty clear what the FIA have said so some teams will probably be more affected, others less," he added.
