FP2: Hamilton remains top

FP2: Hamilton remains top

Mercedes claimed yet another 1-2, Felipe Massa had a heart-in-the-mouth moment and Romain Grosjean got very little mileage under his belt in FP2 in Hungary.

With Lewis Hamilton setting the fastest time in Free Practice 1 at the Hungagoring, the onus was really on Nico Rosberg to try to outdo his Mercedes team-mate in afternoon practice, but it wasn't to be.

Hamilton had the upper hand throughout the session as he posted the fastest time on the harder rubber and then his 1:24.482 on the soft tyres was again too quick for everyone else later in the session.

As was expected, the two Merc cars were too good for the chasing pack as Rosberg settled for P2 - 0.238 off his team-mate's time - with Sebastian Vettel third, Fernando Alonso fourth and Kevin Magnussen completing the top five.

Red Bull are expected to be a lot closer to Merc in Hungary, but Vettel's time of 1:25.111 proved that they are still some way off while his team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, who only completed 14 laps in the morning due to a battery problem, was down in seventh.

Ferrari appeared to have improved with Fernando Alonso following up Kimi Raikkonen's P3 in the morning with a P4 while his Finnish team-mate was in sixth.

Mercedes' race pace though was once again too good for the rest with Red Bull settling for second while Force India also looked solid enough.

Williams, who many believe are the second-fastest team on the grid after Merc, once again failed to reach their full potential as Valtteri Bottas was only P8 while his team-mate Massa took a spin at Turn 6/7. Fortunately for the Brazilian there were no barriers close by and he was able to get his car back on the circuit.

It was also a frustrating session for Romain Grosjean as the Frenchman struggled with a water system issue and could only manage 14 laps. His best time of 1:27.021 put him in 17th place, one spot behind his team-mate Pastor Maldonado.

Behind the Lotus cars you had the Sauber of Esteban Gutierrez, his under pressure team-mate Adrian Sutil was P14, followed by the Caterhams and Marussias.

Caterham's Kamui Kobayashi found himself slipping and sliding all over the track, but he also kept it out of the barriers and was P19 while Max Chilton from Marussia, P21 with 35 laps, had a much better session after his oil leak problem earlier in the morning.
