Ecclestone in talks to end trial

Bernie Ecclestone's bribery trial could soon be over after his lawyers began talks with prosecutors.

Ecclestone's trial began in April in Germany and related to the sale of Formula 1 from BayernLB to CVC.

The F1 supremo is alleged to have bribed former banker Gerhard Gribkowsky to facilitate the sale to CVC, the Brit's preferred bidder.

Should Ecclestone be found guilty he could face up to 10 years in jail.

In a bid to avoid a possible jail sentence the 83-year-old's lawyers met with German prosecutors earlier this week to discuss a settlement.

"Public prosecutors and the defence are discussing the possibility of an agreement," a spokesman for the German authorities told Reuters.

According to reports, Ecclestone has also offered to pay bank BayernLB €25m to bring an end to the trial.

However, under German law, settling with the aggrieved party does not guarantee that a criminal trial will end, that will take the judge and prosecutors agreeing to it.

The trial will continue while the talks are taking place.
