Ecclestone: Greece keen on F1 race

Bernie Ecclestone has revealed that Greece remain keen on joining the Formula One calendar.

The European country first revealed a proposal to host an F1 race back in 2012, but things went quiet after that as they went through an economic crisis.

However, it appears the plans are not dead in the water with the sport's commercial rights holder Ecclestone confirming they are still interested.

"The Greeks are keen," Ecclestone told CNN. "They want me to go and see the Prime Minister [Antonis Samaras] or the mayor.

"We will have to find out if they have got any money."

Ecclestone's company Formula One Licensing has already trademarked the 'Formula 1 Mediterranean Grand Prix' and private investors are looking to build a circuit in the Keratsini-Drapetsona municipality, which is just outside the capital of Athens.

Athanasios Papatheodorou, track architect for the prospective race promoter Dielpis, said: "The Prime Minister himself has supported fully the initiative for organising F1 races and is looking forward to the instruction from the relevant international federations to realise the Dielpis Formula 1 project.

"The greatest benefit for our country would be giving to the world the opportunity to see the most historical port of the Mediterranean Sea and our experience at organising big events, such as the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, is a big credential for us."
