Positive start for Williams

Rob Smedley believes Williams ticked all the right boxes during the two Free Practice sessions at Monza on Friday.

As has become traditional now, Williams didn't show their true value during FP1 with Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa both outside the top 10, but the team were on the boil later on as Bottas was sixth fastest and Massa down in ninth.

What was even more impressive was the race pace that the Finn showed during the longer runs in the afternoon.

Smedley, head of performance engineering, was pleased with the day's work.

"We completed all the work we had planned, plus a bit extra so I am happy with the day," he said. "We have some key data from the aero work and the tyre management was good. Our long runs look competitive and both sets of tyres were manageable. We have to do a lot of work together now to prepare for tomorrow, but it's encouraging to get off to a positive start today."

Despite impressing in FP2, Bottas believes he can extract a bit more from the Williams car.

"We tested the new aero package today which works well," he said. "With the low downforce the car does slide a bit more, but it's manageable. I am really pleased with the long run pace, but think there is a little more to get from it. Qualifying is going to be tight tomorrow, so we are all ready to work hard tonight and find all the gains we can."
