Ross Brawn has downplayed Mercedes' chances of repeating last year's Chinese GP win, saying there is "still a gap to close."

Last season Nico Rosberg put in an impressive display around the Shanghai International circuit as he claimed pole position and followed that up with his inaugural grand prix victory a day later.

That proved to be the only high points in Mercedes' season as the team's form slump as the campaign progressed.

This year, Mercedes have once again started strong with new signing Lewis Hamilton securing a podium finish last time out in Malaysia while Rosberg was right on his rear wing.

Brawn, though, has ruled out the possibility of the team improving on that result by claiming another Chinese GP victory as he reckons the front runners are still that little bit too far ahead.

"The Chinese Grand Prix of course holds great memories following the first win for Nico and our Silver Arrows team in Shanghai last year," said the Mercedes team boss.

"That win was an extremely proud occasion for us all and certainly one that we hope to emulate in the future.

"Our season has started well, perhaps better than we expected, however we're fully aware that there is still a gap to close and that we must keep up the pace of development.

"A lot of hard work has taken place at our factories over the last two weeks to do just that and I look forward to seeing how that translates to track performance."

Meanwhile, Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff says just because the team were the winners last time out in Shanghai that doesn't mean they'll have the pace to do it again this year.

"Like they say, yesterday's home runs don't win today's games, and that's definitely true for us," said the Austrian.

"We start again from zero this year and need to work hard to adapt the car to suit the circuit and the tyre compounds we have available, in the conditions that we find on track next weekend.

"Then we will see where we stand relative to the competition."
