Rosberg: I have the edge over Hamilton

Rosberg: I have the edge over Hamilton

Nico Rosberg believes he has a psychological advantage over team-mate Lewis Hamilton after pulling away from him in the Drivers' Championship.

Although Hamilton has more race wins than Rosberg this season, it is the German who is leading the Championship.

His second victory of the campaign, which came in Monaco, not only saw him bring Hamilton's run of four successive race wins to an end but it also meant he retook the lead in the Championship.

That lead was further extended to 22 points at the next race in Montreal where Rosberg finished second while Hamilton retired with brake failure.

"If your team-mate has three or four wins in a row that's obviously going to strengthen his position," the German told Press Association.

"So it was really important to bring that run to an end because psychology is a big part of sports.

"If you have those results behind you, like I do now, it gives you that little bit extra, that little bit of an edge, so it does help. It's important."

It has not, however, been all smooth running for Rosberg as the 28-year-old suffered a similar ERS problem to Hamilton in Canada.

The difference was that Rosberg was able to nurse his car to the finish line, albeit only in second place, while Hamilton was forced to park his W05.

Rosberg said: "In hindsight it was damage limitation in Canada, coming second, lots of points. I could look back and say it was still a decent day.

"For the team it sucked because our ambition is to do much better. With reliability problems like that, it's not good. We need to be bulletproof.

"It's a work in progress. We've been good with reliability, but we have had a few problems now, so we have to keep on going and make sure it's 100 per cent, but of course it's never easy."

The Championship leader reiterated his disappointment with the Canadian result, once again stated that in the W05 Mercedes have a car that should win every race.

"That's not good," he said. "It sucks because our car is fast enough to win every race, so coming away from Canada without the win was a big disappointment for our team.

"We need to bounce back in Austria and finish one-two in every race given the car we have."
