Rosberg, Ricciardo escapes sanctions

Nico Rosberg and Daniel Ricciardo has both avoided penalties despite overtaking under red flags in first practice at Silverstone.

First practice for the British Grand Prix was red flagged for 16 minutes after Felipe Massa crashed his Williams FW36.

Under the sport's regulations, no driver may overtake another while the red flags are being waved.

However, both Rosberg and Ricciardo did.

The Mercedes driver was deemed to have overtaken Toro Rosso's Daniil Kvyat while Ricciardo did the same to Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.

The duo were both summoned to see the stewards but after giving their explanations they were cleared.

The stewards ruled that Rosberg has overtaken under "acceptable circumstances" while Ricciardo "took all reasonable actions to comply with the regulations and proceed in a safe manner."
