Rosberg laments one-man fight for pole

Nico Rosberg was delighted to claim pole position at Hockenheim, but admits he would've preferred to go head-to-head with Lewis Hamilton in qualifying.

The German will start his home race in P1 ahead of the Williams duo of Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa while his Mercedes team-mate Hamilton will be down in P15.

Hamilton lost control of his car in Q1 and went sliding into the barriers, forcing him to miss the final two qualifying sessions.

That meant Rosberg had a pretty straightforward run to pole and his 1:16.540 put him ahead of the rest of the pack, but he admits he would've been happier if he had been able to battle his team-mate.

"Home race here to be on pole is fantastic, but I would've preferred if it was an open fight with Lewis," he said.

"A little bit less happier as a result because Lewis didn't have a shot at it in the end, but overall it has been a fantastic day up to now. But no points for today. It is important tomorrow and it's still a long way to go."

He added: "I didn't have any details about the other car. It didn't apply to my car. I was comfortable that I could keep on pushing."

While conditions were extremely hot on Friday and Saturday at Hockenheim, cooler temperatures are expected on race day, something which Rosberg is welcoming.

"As for tomorrow, it's going to be a little bit colder which will make it a little bit easier on the tyres," he said. "The tyres are very, very soft so degradation is very high. Also the weather could play a role so just need to take it as it comes."
