Nigel Stepney killed in road accident

Former Ferrari mechanic Nigel Stepney, who was at the heart of the spygate scandal, has been killed in a road accident.

The Brit was involved in a traffic accident on Friday and pronounced dead on the scene.

PC Glen Braidwood of Kent Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit told Dover Express: "A silver VW caddy van, driven by a 56 year-old man from the Essex area, had stopped on the hard shoulder of the M20 Londonbound carriageway at Ashford.

"For reasons yet to be established, the man appears to have entered the carriageway and was then in collision with an articulated goods vehicle. He was pronounced deceased at the scene."

Stepney began his career in Formula 1 back in 1977 and 30 years later left under a dark cloud as the spygate rocked the sport.

Working for Ferrari at the time, the Brit was accused of handing secret technical information to McLaren's Mike Coughlan.

The 56-year-old moved on to sportscars working with JRM in recent years.

The company released a statement: "JRM regrets to announce that Nigel Stepney, the company's Racing Team Manager and Technical Director, was killed in a car accident this morning. He was 56 years old and leaves his loving partner and daughter, Ash and Sabine Stepney."

Stepney was also survived by his three children from an earlier marriage, Laura, Cassie and Joshua Stepney.
