As he faces yet another season without a World title, Fernando Alonso says he would rather have more titles and less respect.
The double World Champ last tasted Championship success in 2006 when he won back-to-back titles with Renault.
Moving to Ferrari in 2010 with the aim of adding more, Alonso instead found himself losing to Sebastian Vettel for four years running and now to Mercedes.
And although many in the paddock rate him as the best driver on the grid, Alonso says he would rather have more titles than their respect.
"It's been five years like this," said the 32-year-old.
"There is always the satisfaction that everyone believes that you are performing at your best.
"There's the respect from the drivers, team principals and fans for the job that you do, but I'd prefer to have no respect and win more trophies.
"At the moment we are not in that position, so let's try to be a little bit better and try to do more podiums, more wins, and help the team more and more."
The Ferrari driver has ruled out catching the Mercedes drivers in the Championship race.
Sunday's Austrian GP saw him once again lose ground to Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, who finished first and second while Alonso brought his F14T home in fifth place.
His gap to Championship leader Rosberg is now 86 points while Ferrari are 203 behind Mercedes.
He added: "To close the gap to Mercedes? Impossible.
"The difference is too much. We cannot touch the engine (under the homologation rules), we cannot do big changes and they are over 200 points ahead of us in the Constructors' Championship.
"If I tell you we will recover that gap or fight with them... I do not think with the engine freeze we can do anything."
He is, however, hoping that next season may yield better.
"In one year many things can happen.
"We saw some cases in the past that from one year to another many things can change, especially this year when we are very new with the regulations.
"I expect in 2015 there will be big steps from everybody, including Mercedes, so we will all be better next year.
"But definitely the teams that started with lower baselines have more margin to improve and will get closer to the level of Mercedes.
"I hope in time, because it is not a job you can do in one day, that our intention is to be at that level."
