Mattiaci: Ferrari not happy with second

Ferrari team principal Marco Mattiacci insists plenty of hard work lies ahead despite Fernando Alonso's second place in Hungary.

Two-time World Champion Alonso produced a masterful display in interchanging conditions at the Hungagoring on Sunday, coming from fifth on the grid to finish second behind Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull.

Although delighted that the team were on the podium for only the second time this season, Mattiacci says they still have plenty to think about during the three-week summer break.

"We will not stop thinking about how the projects will work, so there is no shut down there," he said.

"We are 1.2s behind the leader, that's a month or year's work so we cannot shut down mentally. That's why I think we need to be careful about this second place because need to be cautious and aware there is still work to be done.

"It is good, motivating, but now the team really has to understand the meaning of this second place. It doesn't put us away from our trajectory of thinking. We are not here to be happy with second place as Ferrari."

It was a mixed weekend for Ferrari's top brass though as they came under heavy criticism on Saturday evening after a poor call from the pitwall saw Kimi Raikkonen knocked out in Q1.

The Finn admitted that the team can't afford to make "first-year mistakes" and urged them to get rid of the "weaknesses in the system".

Mattiacci, though, warns it's important not to overreact.

"I think you need to be very careful to take a decision based on what happened in a weekend," he said.

"Like I said we have a plan and we have highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of the team. It's not a weekend that is going to change for the worst, Saturday, or the best, second place, neither are going to change the way we want to go.

"Kimi is right that we need to be vigilant on such decisions but it is a team decision."
