Webber pragmatic about penalty

Despite only losing out to Kimi Raikkonen in Friday's second practice, Mark Webber concedes he won't be starting the Bahrain GP from pole as he faces a three-place penalty.

Putting the medium tyres on his RB9 after the first 30 minutes of second practice, Webber shot to the front of the timesheets with a 1:34.184. That time proved to be unbeatable as first Sebastian Vetetl and then Fernando Alonso tried.

However, minutes later it was Raikkonen's turn on the medium tyres and he did succeed where the others had failed, going 0.030s quicker than Webber's best.

But despite finishing up second, the Aussie, who covered just 26 laps on Friday afternoon, saying he's "pretty happy" with his Red Bull racer.

"We didn't get to do enough laps unfortunately in P2," Webber said. "I will have to rely on Sebastian's data, and see how it went for him.

"Overall when I was on track I was not too bad at all, I'm pretty happy with the car.

"But never, ever rest on our laurels, there's still areas to improve, and we need to say how we're progressing on both cars as well in terms of developments, and pick out what we need for tomorrow.

"I think the car looks really competitive, but again we see Kimi arrive for one lap every now and again and he's still very, very fast.

"Kimi is strong, Ferrari are strong, Mercedes is still there as well. It's very, very tight, the first three or four rows are very, very tight on time, and the Force Indias are in there as well."

The one thing the 36-year-old is sure of ahead of Saturday's qualifying is that no matter how well he does, he won't be starting the grand prix from pole position after being slapped with a three-place penalty for hitting Jean-Eric Vergne in China.

"Let's see how qualifying goes, and then after that obviously the race is more important. Especially for me with the penalty, for sure I won't be starting on pole! But I need to clear people in the race somehow."
