The 16-year-old, the son of former Formula One driver Jos, has impressed in the Formula 3 European Championship and Red Bull motorsport advisor Marko Helmut was eager to tie him down to a contract.

The youngster, who was also linked with Mercedes, currently leads the F3 standings with seven race victories in his debut season.

"We are very pleased to announce that Max Verstappen has accepted our invitation to join the Red Bull Junior Team," Red Bull said in a statement.

"This is effective immediately and the 16-year-old will continue his Formula 3 campaign at the Nurburgring this weekend as a Red Bull Junior."

Verstappen will join up with Pierre Gasly of France, Spaniard Carlos Sainz, Jr. and Britain's Alex Lynn in the Red Bull Junior Team.

"It goes without saying that I'm very happy and I feel honoured to be part of the Red Bull Junior Team, which has successfully brought and guided many drivers into Formula One," said Verstappen.

"I will take this opportunity with both hands in order to develop and maximise my career with Red Bull. I want to thank Dr. Helmut Marko for his involvement in making this partnership possible and I want to thank Red Bull for putting their trust in me."
