Force India are benefitting from the "reset" created by the new 2014 regulations, according to Nico Hulkenberg.

Returning to the team after a season with Sauber, Hulkenberg and his new team-mate Sergio Perez have made a great start to the Championship.

Battling at the front end of the field behind the Mercedes drivers, the duo have amassed 54 points with Perez even claiming a podium at the Bahrain GP.

Those 54 points have put Force India third in the Constructors' Championship while Hulkenberg, who has scored in every grand prix, is fourth in the Drivers' standings.

"At the start of the year, the team said it wanted to improve on last year and so far it's going according to plan," the German told The Economic Times.

"We have 54 points from four races and we are third in the team standings. There is a long way to go, but we can keep up the momentum."

He added: "The team has worked extremely hard over the winter and produced a great car.

"We also have a strong engine partner in Mercedes and it feels like we have utilised our opportunities."

Pushed as to what lay behind Force India's flying start to this Championship, the 26-year-old admitted that the new regulations had played a big role.

"I think new regulations create a 'reset' for all teams. It changes the established order a bit and that is what we've seen this year.

"I think it has given us a chance to be more competitive than in previous seasons.

"The team sacrificed a lot last year to concentrate on 2014 and I think it has proved to be a sensible decision."
