They may still be some way off from challenging at the front of the grid, but McLaren are finally making progress.

That's the view from team principal Martin Whitmarsh after Jenson Button and Sergio Perez claimed the team's highest points haul of the season in Germany.

Both Button and Perez finished in the points for only the third time this season with the former securing P6 and his Mexican team-mate bringing his car home in eighth place.

The result in German was certainly good news for the Woking squad after they failed to pick up points at Silverstone and Montreal.

"Obviously I'm not doing handstands or anything like that," Whitmarsh is quoted as saying by Press Association Sport.

"We are still not where we expect to be or want to be, but at least it was a step in the right direction.

He added: "After a record 64 races in the points, to then go the following two races without points was a bit of a sharpener to the mind."

McLaren were one of several teams who struggled on the aggressive Pirelli tyres earlier in the season, but the introduction of the Kevlar belt for the rears in Germany appear to have benefitted the team.

Whitmarsh, though, insists their continued development of the MP4-28 was the main reason for their improved display.

"I don't think there has been a change of the pecking order as a consequence of what we saw in Germany," he said.

"For us, there are no secrets here, we have to continue to try to develop the car, understand it.

"We've made a little bit of progress, but frankly not as much as we would like.

"We've a limited amount of resource on it because we are very much focused on next year.

"But as racers we won't give up. We'll be racing hard and trying to make a bit more progress the rest of this year."
