Pirelli changes had 'neutral' impact

Sam Michael has downplayed the impact of Pirelli's new tyres, saying it was "pretty neutral".

For the first time this season, the Formula One drivers raced the revised Pirelli tyres at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The new tyres feature last year's construction with this year's compounds and in their first event none of the drivers suffered the tyre delaminations that had blighted earlier races.

And although the new tyres also saw McLaren for only the fourth time this season, Michael reckons they had little impact on the pecking order.

"I think it's pretty neutral to be honest," he told ESPN. "If you look up and down the grid I don't think it's made a big difference."

As for McLaren's foray into the points, the team's sporting director said: "We've still got a long way to go.

"We still need to be up there and seventh and ninth is good compared to where we've been [earlier in the season] but we need to be winning."
