Jenson Button admits McLaren were hoping to challenge for third place at Spa, but is nevertheless happy that the team are improving.
After their nightmare start to the 2013 season, the Woking squad took several steps forward before the summer break and they continued to move in the right direction at the Belgian Grand Prix as Button finished sixth.
The eight points also helped McLaren to move into fifth place on the Constructors standings - one place ahead of Force India.
It was a great result for the 2009 World Champion considering he had to change his strategy after stopping too early.
"We made the mistake at the start of the race by pitting too early. We went from a one to a two-stop and then back to a one but the front left tyre gave up," Button said.
"We gave it a go but the pace was not good enough. It's definitely progress, we were expecting to be fighting for third. We know the reasons and hopefully we can put that right in Monza.
"It's nice to be racing up there with the Mercedes and one of the Red Bulls. We're making progress, it's just tough at the moment."
