Perez 'under scrutiny' from rivals

McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh has urged Sergio Perez to be a bit more cautious in race situations as he is "under scrutiny" from fellow drivers.

The Mexican was given a drive-through penalty during Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix after stewards deemed he forced Romain Grosjean from Lotus off the track.

It is not the first time this season that his driving has been criticised as Grosjean's team-mate Kimi Raikkonen as well as Ferrari's Fernando Alonso also slammed him earlier in the season.

Although Whitmarsh says Perez needs to be careful to avoid penalties, he feels that the more experienced drivers on the grid are "ganging up" on him.

"When you're under scrutiny, you've got to watch it," he is quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

He added: "Inevitably, what drivers do when a young charger comes up, is that in drivers' briefings the experienced guys do try to gang up and create an environment where they are under some scrutiny.

"I've seen that many times. One day Sergio will be one of those drivers."

McLaren team-mate Jenson Button accused Perez of "dirty driving" earlier in the season and Whitmarsh believes the Mexican needs to "watch it".

"He's got to adjust that," he said. "I don't think [the manoeuvre] was that bad but on the other hand he was past, he could have given him another half a metre and he would have been clean and away.

"You can see he is looking over at the corner ahead of him. It's not deliberate but when you're in his position you've got to be careful. When you're under a bit of scrutiny you've got to watch it."
