Button: Seventh place isn't too bad

Jenson Button wasn't at all despondent after missing out on a podium in Singapore, saying it was "good fun" trying to achieve it.

With 10 laps to go in Sunday's night race at the Marina Bay circuit, Button was lapping in third place with Kimi Raikkonen dogging him.

The Lotus driver soon made his move after which Button dropped rather rapidly as his MP4-28 lacked the pace needed to hold his rivals at bay.

"We thought we might have a chance of a podium, but in the end we didn't have the pace to keep us ahead of the closing cars," he said.

"It was good fun trying though, and we have to take risks if we want to get podium finishes this year."

The Brit crossed the line in seventh place, revealing that his tyres had been destroyed in his battle with Raikkonen.

"We expected to spend most of the race on the Option tyre, so we'd set the car up for that.

"The Prime tyre didn't work so well for me, and having to hold Kimi off for so long destroyed my rear tyres and made things very tricky.

"In the end, as I say, we simply didn't have enough pace to stop him overtaking."

He added: "It was a good try though, and a P7 finish isn't too bad.

"We couldn't have done any better with a different strategy, I'm certain of that, and I'm glad we got some good points for the team."

Button's seventh coupled with Sergio Perez's P8 has at least given McLaren a bit of a cushion over Force India in the battle for fifth in the Constructors' Championship as the Woking team is now 14 points ahead.
